To My Breeder – a rescue poem

Poem crossposted with permission from author:

…I wrote it earlier after “losing” another dog at the pound I work at – I wish Ostara had the space to take them all. It’s inspired by another poem called “They put me to sleep today” (author unknown). Anyone is welcome to repost, I just ask that it’s credited as – Cheryl Churton, Ostara Dog Rescue.

RIP Gherkin

To My Breeder

They put me to sleep today,
Because I was bred without regard
They put me to sleep today,
Because I was bred just to look “hard.”
They put me to sleep today,
Because I was sold to make a penny
They put me to sleep today,
Because there already were too many.

They put me to sleep today,
Because you didn’t treat me right
They put me to sleep today,
Because you beat me every night.
They put me to sleep today,
Because you wanted me to guard
They put me to sleep today,
Because I’m brindled and I’m scarred.

They put me to sleep today,
Because I was dumped outside a school
They put me to sleep today,
Because the kennels were too full.
They put me to sleep today,
Because each one’s an “SBT”
They put me to sleep today,
Because nobody wanted me.

They put me to sleep today,
But the crimes were not all mine
They put me to sleep today,
But I know you think it’s fine.
They put me to sleep today,
But to you I was just a thing
They put me to sleep today,
But you won’t feel the needle’s sting.

They put me to sleep today,
“I’m sorry, boy,” she said
They put me to sleep today,
It should have been you instead.
